Why Ukrainian

Reasons to start.

Around 32 million native speakers and roughly 39 million in total, the official language of Ukraine, with large communities in Poland, Germany, Canada and the US.

Spelling is close to phonemic: Ukrainian is written much as it is said, so a word you have never met is still pronounceable the first time.

Grammar and vocabulary overlap heavily with Polish, Belarusian and Russian, so Ukrainian opens the West and East Slavic families at once.

Bonus: Very close to Belarusian, and it shares a great deal with Polish and Russian. The false friends are real, though: так is “yes” in Ukrainian, not the Russian “like that”.

Is it hard? How long?

The honest version.

FSI Category III (~1,100 hours), the same tier as Russian and Polish. Seven cases, verb aspect and consonant alternations do the work. The alphabet takes a week or two and includes letters Russian does not have: ґ, є, і and ї.

Whatever the category, the method is the same: read a lot of Ukrainian, learn the most common words first, and let a spaced-repetition system resurface them right before you forget. See the method.

Is Ukrainian hard to learn?

Ukrainian is a hard language for English speakers, in the same FSI tier as Russian and Polish. Seven cases and verb aspect are the real work. Spelling is close to phonemic, so pronunciation is one of the easier parts.
