Around 13 million native speakers. Hungarian is official in Hungary and the European Union, and large communities live in Romania, Slovakia, and Serbia.

The grammar is regular once you see the pattern. Suffixes stack in a fixed order, so one noun carries case, number, and possession.

Tatoeba holds one of the largest Hungarian-English sentence banks, so frequency-ordered practice has real depth.

Bonus: Hungarian is a Uralic language. It is not mutually intelligible with Finnish, even though the two share a distant family. Neighbours who speak German, Slovak, or Romanian do not unlock it for free.

The honest version.

FSI Category III (~1,100 hours), the same tier as Greek, Finnish, and Polish. The FSI marks Hungarian as harder than most languages in that tier. Vowel harmony picks the suffix. Verbs mark a definite object. The Latin script is the easy part.

Is Hungarian hard to learn?

Hungarian is a hard language for English speakers. It sits in the same FSI tier as Greek and Finnish, and the FSI marks it as harder than most of that group. The Latin alphabet is not the work. Case, vowel harmony, and the definite verb are the work.

How long does it take to learn Hungarian?

The FSI places Hungarian in Category III, at roughly 1,100 class hours (about 44 weeks of intensive study) to reach professional working proficiency. Reading simple texts with lookups comes a long way before that point.

What is the best way to learn Hungarian?
